(Launch Membership Course) Film Viewing and Panel Discussion
While we celebrate the many successes women have achieved, the #MeToo movement sheds light on the fact that there is much work yet to do. Some people ask why women suffer in silence, and why, after accomplishing numerous firsts, do approximately 12 million women in the United States experience clinical depression, 42.4 million women have experienced rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime and finally why are only 6% of women CEOs despite the fact that women make up 44% of the overall S&P 500 labor force?
With women representing over 50% of the U.S. population, social workers and other professionals must work collaboratively to empower all women to transition from depression to happiness, from abuse to love and from poverty to prosperity. This presentation will provide a description of depression, domestic violence, poverty and the connection between them. It will also offer insight into how a diverse group of 12 women overcame their adversity and victimization to start living the lives they deserved. Economic and social justice ideas will be explained, and community empowerment approaches to preventing the marginalization of women will be discussed.
